Historic Overview of The Schools in the Hill Country of Travis County

Settlers started moving into the rural areas in the mountains of western Travis County in the 1860s. By the 1870s, Fairview School (now Nameless School) and Sandy Creek School (now Round Mountain School) were established near creeks to educate the local children. In 1885 another school was erected along the northern bank of the Colorado River. Moved to higher ground later, it became Cox Springs School. These one-room schools served the children of ranchers, farmers and cedar choppers, the primary students in the 1930s-1950s.

Both Round Mountain and Nameless Schools operated through Spring 1942 after which those students attended nearby Leander ISD schools. Cox Springs School continued to operate in the small schoolhouse until 1959 when its students transferred to the newly developed Lago Vista school. The old school buildings also served as churches and community centers.
